Love

I love Shoko’s thoughtful blog, so when I saw this post by her for Valentine’s Day, I couldn’t help but share it.

Why shouldn’t I get to celebrate love, just because I was single? After work on the evening of the 14th, I picked up a slice of red velvet cake and some flowers, and treated myself to a book that I’d had my eye on for months. When I got home, I cooked myself foods that I love, and put down a deposit on a set of ten French lessons. It was not just a good night, it was a great night. It was empowering.

What’s your Valentine’s view?

While I’m not totally into the whole commercial idea of flowers/candy/chocolate or the fact that boys are expected to dish out lavish, extravagant gifts on only one particular day of the year, I do like the fact that this day exists and I have the opportunity to tell others around me, and not just my partner, how much I love and appreciate their presence in my life.  I don’t think Valentine’s Day should just be for people with partners or spouses – I think it should be for everyone and I think everyone should spread the sentiment of love, even if it just means spoiling yourself with your favourite meal or turning off your mobile phone and snuggling up with a good book.
